What is Game Club?
“Game Club” Video Game Design Club:
Where Creativity Meets Tech
This past summer, we set out to create a class that would give young video game enthusiasts the chance to learn how to compose music, add sound effects, and create voiceover dialogue for video games. However, in our search for the best educational tools that would allow users to add audio to simple game engines, we discovered an fantastic browser-based platform that not only lets users add their own audio to video games, but offers complete game design functionality, allowing kids to create their very own video games, including character design and world building from scratch!
Inspired by this discovery, we partnered with a dedicated STEAM teacher to lead our brand-new Game Design Club. In this club, kids will dive into both video game design and audio production in a fun, hands-on environment. If your child loves playing video games and is eager to learn how to create their own, Game Club is the perfect place to start.
Keylab’s Video Game Design Club introduces kids to the exciting world of game development using a combination of visual programming and text-based instructions. Rather than just dragging and dropping pre-made elements, students will also enter simple text-based commands to create game mechanics, set rules, and design logic systems. This blend of visual programming and text-based coding helps kids not only develop games but also learn foundational skills in programming, logic sequencing, and problem-solving.
By using a combination of drag-and-drop functionality and text-based inputs, kids will gain a more complete understanding of game development. They’ll create interactive gameplay by linking commands to in-game actions and audio cues, such as if-then logic, movement, and behavior rules, helping them understand how games react to user input.
This method introduces computational thinking in an accessible way, teaching analytical skills while still encouraging creativity. As kids design their own 2D and 3D games, they’ll develop a deeper understanding of how games work from the inside out.
Game Design + Audio Production: Bring Your Ideas to Life
In addition to designing and building their own games, kids will also get to create their own audio. They’ll produce sound effects, background music, and even voiceovers for their games. Whether they’re creating original audio or using a stock sound library, they’ll learn how to integrate these elements into their game for a fully immersive experience.
Combining game design with audio production not only enhances the gaming experience but also gives kids a chance to develop skills in sound design, music composition, and storytelling. This well-rounded approach helps them see the connections between different forms of media and the creative process.
